With those rectangular fog and reverse lights it’s a 1990-1998 model, so most likely legit.

However... it does not seem to have the external rollcage. Also no side repeater lights (at the back at least). The roof rack looks flimsier and not as tall as the ones I’ve seen in pictures of the white NAS 110s.

EDIT: sorry, now I understand what you meant: being a 1990/1991 vehicle would make it legal for import. Apologies.

It’s most likely not USDM spec, rather an import. The side repeaters are there, but have been replaced with LEDs or silver bulbs with clear lenses. The ‘90- models are all TDi (at least in the UK), but it’s hard to tell on this one without seeing the exhaust or engine bay!

Edit: Sorry, side repeaters. I thought you meant indicators. I’m not aware of what is required for US spec Defenders.

My thoughts is that it’s a freshly imported 1990 Defender, we’re going to start seeing more and more of them this side of the pond now they’re all becoming 25 years old.

Indeed, I was writing my edit right at the same time you were replying. Must be a “proper” import.

NAS 110 Defenders are extremely interesting when compared with was being sold in the UK and the European market. Particularly that roll cage, it blends surprisingly well with the rest of the car (in my opinion):

No petrol Defenders after 1990 in the UK??? I had no idea.

Aren’t a lot of companies still importing these (sans engine) as “kits” to avoid the law? I know that was a big thing around here for a while, at least among the upper-crusters who wouldn’t be caught dead in a plebian Wrangler :D (nothing against Defenders, but their status symbology got a little out of hand around here)

I know you could get the V8 in the 130 in the 90's, but I’m pretty sure the 90 and 110s carried only the TDi units. Don’t quote me on that though.

It would make sense that the V8 was available in the 130s, which I understand were an SVE product (unless they became “mainstream” after the 127). I suppose basically built by order.

And it would certainly make sense that normal production Defenders were diesel!

They had to have side marker lights at each corner to say nothing of the million and one other changes needed. No indicator repeaters needed though.

Imported vehicles don’t have to be modified so far as I know.

If your kicking yourself. Think how crap I feel. 12 years ago I was at a steam rally just outside Carlisle and a farmer had a ‘Mk1 1949 Land Rover’ for sale. I was drawn to it to say “hey mate, you mean a Series I”. When I saw the price tag of £500. It was a bronze green soft top in immaculate condition the farmer was selling as his father passed away. This was at the time Americans were paying very silly money for Series I Landies. I still kick myself to this day for not buying it.

It was when I was heavily into Landies and would of wanted one for me to just sit and admire. I could probably of got him down to £350 as he had no idea about the car. Hey-ho. Such is life.

Yeh upto the point of the 130, the 127's had a modified 110 chassis. After that they became their own beast, and damn do I want one :)

Ouch.

I have a similar story about a stepnose Giulia GT. It was far from immaculate, but solid.

On the other hand I was studying, did not even have a proper job and most crucially did not have a driving licence. This was in 1985 or 1986 and the guy had asked just the equivalent of 300 euro for it. Later he went down to 150.

I still think of that car.

I had a bit of brain fade up there. I meant “side markers” but typed “side repeater lights”.

This foreign language thing can get a bit difficult sometimes.

It’s like the one that got away.

At the time the U.S. Was paying £20,000 to 30,000 for a Series I from average to good condition.

This one looked like it was left in the back of a barn for 20+ years. No visible rust or anything.

I’m going to start crying soon.

Kinja'd!!! AuthiCooper1300 > Svend

So what is the going rate now in the US for an average Series 1? Lower than then?

Just realised – around the same time a mate of mine was offered a ten- or twelve-year old Alpine A110 (1300) for 500 euro... because it had a broken damper mount. He passed, being much more adept at spending money on booze and such.

I can’t even imagine the price of the bloody thing now.

I’ve no idea. I used to be a big Landrophile. It’ll certainly be a lot less now Defenders are legal for import under the 25 year f++k-up rule.

Cars that used to be so cheap are going for ridiculous money these days so there isn’t much profit on selling them on.

OK, thanks. I have an 86" (1954), but had to stop the restoration after doing chassis, axles and gearbox. No intention whatsoever of selling... yet. But at least it seems that if things keep getting worse I can offload the lot more or less easily.
